Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present form of to be in the context of introducing themselves.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation taking place when two people meet and introduce themselves in the context of meeting new people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture of two people talking to each other next to an info desk and elicits their thoughts to set the context. * What do you think they are talking about? * What do they ask each other? * Is it a social or formal introduction? * What information do you think they need to know?

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T plays the audio file to see if their predictions were correct. When they hear the conversation, * T plays the audio file 2 to highlight the TL and gives a handout. * Ss will fill the gaps, check in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss fill the gaps and T plays the audio once more for the Ss to check their answers individually. * T clarifies the meaning: We use am/is/are to describe things and to talk about things that do not change (currently). * T plays the audio file 2 once more to check individually and clarify the TL, uses finger technique to show contracted form of the TL. * T clarifies the pronunciation by drilling and then the form. (Positive, negative and question forms)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will listen to the information about Bill and fill the gaps with the verb "be" and possessive adjectives.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will answer the Qs about Sabine and check in pairs. One st will ask each information at a time and the other one will answer. When the pair check is done, T runs a WCFB to fill the information on the WB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T give the handout "find someone who" and Ss walk around to find the matching student.
