Description

In this lesson, students learn how talk about housework based on reading two passages about one family. The first passage is about family in 1970 and the other family is in 2017. The lesson starts with discussion about some photos. This is followed by pre teaching vocabulary related to the story. After that, gist reading where the students read for a general question. Then, reading for details which is about true and false. Finally there is some controlled practice through some questions, and free practice speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greeting the students at the beginning. The main aim in the warming up is to elicit the vocabulary housework from them, so starting the lead-in by showing some pictures of my old flat , and have them say what was I doing in my flat? They will try to say clean , dirty, food, cook and old pictures. After that, ask them what do you think our lesson is about? The answer is the housework.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask the students to pay attention to the OHP and write what do we do during the housework for example: clean, cook, dry the dishes, wash the dishes, barbecue ,ironing , make the bed, and go shopping. During this stage, try to drill the words and make sure they can pronounce them accurately. During this stage, they students see the pictures and then write individually. Afterwards, they discuss with their partner about them.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Reading for gist, ask the students see the pictures of the family on the OHP, and give them a handout including the passage. Then, let them answer which photo shows. Her mother? Her grandmother? Her husband? Her grandfather? at this stage, you might need to elicit the words grandmother and grandfather Gives them 30 seconds to skim it alone and have an idea of the passage. Then, they will answer the questions with their partners. After 3 minutes, the whole class gives their feedback about the main idea of the passage.

While-Reading#2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Reading for details, tell the students to read for 5 minutes individually to answer true/false questions, and then discuss and solve the questions with their groups. (The teacher monitors his students). After solving the questions in their groups, ask a volunteer from each group to run to the end of the class and check the answer key. This can be challenging for them to finish on time.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Divide the students into new groups, and let them talk about their family. Who does these things in your home? Who cooks the food? Who buys the food? Who cleans your flat/ house? who helps? what do you do at home? Finally, the semi controlled activity, ask them to write what they do they do at home?
