Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of shopping and buying things.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification on the functional language used in the context and proper use of determiners (this/that/these/those) as well as question words.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Break seating into 4 clusters if possible. Energizer and prep for Practice Stage. Teacher starts with a short introduction/ice-breaker. *** Project image of shopping-in-action. Do you shop? What do you always do when you go shopping? (Talk - ask questions - price - size - quantity - pay - be happy). Example questions? Teacher elicits to check existing vocab with shopping questions. Provide T-S FB based on answers/responses.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show shopping conversation video. Outline task - SOLO listening task - try to get 2 or 3 sentences from the video. *** Play video. Ask if they need to watch it again. Play video again if needed. Get them to work in their groups to check answers. 3-minute task. Teacher monitors, checks answers and give feedback via T-S interactions. *** Provide transcript of video conversation. *** Show picture of coat and cups. Outline task - create sentences to buy the coat and cups. Work in groups. 2 minutes. Speaking task - Ask students to practice the conversation in groups. 3 minutes. Teacher monitors and provide feedback via T-S interaction. *** Teacher provides answer key.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher shows word order for shopping questions on WB. Outline task - work in groups to get work order correctly for given or imaginary objects. 5 minutes *** Teacher give word cutouts to Ss for practice using 2 given objects. Teacher monitors and provide feedback via T-S interaction. Teacher will highlight special situations with this/that and these/those on WB.

Practice Stage (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Outline task - work in groups to create 4 conversations for shopping (2 singular items, 2 plural items, pair/pairs of sunglasses) - 5 minutes. Teacher monitors and provide feedback via T-S interaction. Outline task - practice speaking in groups using products from earlier task - 10 minutes. Teacher monitors and provide feedback via T-S interaction. *** Project slide with list of new items. Break them into new groups of two. Get them to create new conversations using the new items. 10-15 minutes. Teacher monitors and provide feedback via T-S interaction.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Perform concept checks, drills and clarification with available time.
