TP1: Getting to know
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students are going to revise question words and practice them using in present, past and future forms. we will also discuss the difference between the words "whose" and "who's", work on their pronunciation. Students will work on developing their receptive skills by listening for gist and after that students will develop their productive skills with practising their own dialogues.

Main Aims

  • To give students exposure and practice of present, past and future future question forms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening for gist. To highlight the pronunciation of "whose" and "who's"

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- different question words are depicted on the white board; - using student's previous experience of learning question words T ask them questions in different tense forms: What is your name? Where are you from? How old are you? Who is your favourite actor? How many cars are there in Istanbul? How many cars were there in Istanbul 20 years ago? Where did you go yesterday? How often do you eat fast food? How much time does it take to reach home for you? What's your teacher's name? What are you going to cook for dinner today? - SS receive cards with sentences which they should complete with the questions; - check the task all together.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To set the context and generate the interest of the topic of the lesson and activate the vocabulary.

- SS look at the picture and ask as many questions as possible to find out the who is the man from the photo. - SS answer T's questions: What are the best ways of leaning English? Do you think an English speaking environment helps people to learn English faster? - SS look through the text of the dialogue, complete the sentences with missing question words.

While-Listening #1 (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with listening for gist.

- SS are Listening to the dialogue for gist (Play CD 1, track 5) - PW, SS check the answers with each other. -SS find and read the examples of present, past and future tenses from the text. - pass out the slips of paper with information about Serkan. - SS put them into the correct chronological order. - Checking all together the answers.

Post-Listening (8-15 minutes) • To provide practice for specific information, further activation of question forms, develop speaking skills.

- explain the difference between between "whose" and "who's" (Ex. 3, p. 8) - SS practice using "whose" and "who's" in sentences of ex.4, p8 - SS are listening to the audio file, for the sentences which are used with the word "whose" they should shout 1!!! For those sentences which are used with the word "who's" they should shout 2!!! (CD 1, t.1.7) - SS complete the sentences with the missing words and after finishing they check in pairs (ex.6, p.8). - after checking in pair, SS are listening the audio file and we are discussing them all together (CD 1, t.1.8) - SS discuss the questions in pairs
