Description

In this lesson Ss will read a text about Steve Jobs and they will speak about his quotations at the end of the lesson. The lesson starts with the questions about 'icons'. Ss will see the photo of Steve Jobs and they will try to find out what/who they are and their relation between these people and Steve Jobs. Then T gives the text for gist and then they read it again for details. At the end of the lesson Ss will have a productive task, there will be six groups and they speak about the quotations which belong to Steve Jobs.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about modern icons in the context of Steve Jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion with quotations in the context of Steve Jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts with a question about 'icon' to elicit the meaning of the word. Asks an example from the Ss about who/what they might be. Then T shows Steve Jobs' photo and asks what they know about him. T gives some time to discuss the question in groups.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows some pictures taken from the text (in the book) and asks if they know what/who they are and if they can guess the relation between Steve Jobs and these pictures. They discuss the pictures few minutes in groups.

While-Reading #1 Gist (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives the HO for gist. 'Match the headlines with the paragraphs'. T gives the HO for gist. They read it and fold the paper. Ss will be given 2 minutes to read the text. They will read it individually. Then they will answer the question. Peer check. WC check.

While-Reading #2a (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T gives the HO about vocabulary. 'match the paragraphs with the headlines'. Ss will read the definitions first and they will try to find the correct word for each definition written on the HO. Ss will check the answers from the Answer Key. WC check to make it clearer.

While-Reading #2b (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Read the text for details. They will have 4-5 mins to read the text again. Then they will decide if the sentences are true or false. Check in the groups. WC check.

Post-Reading (10-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Before you start change the groups with colourful cards. Give a sentence quoted from Steve Jobs for each group. They will think about the sentence and then discuss the meaning in the group. Then Ss will tell what they think about the quotation and the rest of the class will tell if they agree or disagree with those ideas.
