Description

In this lesson, the students will learn how to write an autobiography of themselves, the story of their life in brief (around 6 or 7 sentences). Lesson begins with students putting in the correct chronological order a set of small pieces of paper (the story of their teacher's life in brief). Then they will do a matching exercise (key vocabulary in the lesson and the definitions). After that, they will read Ed Murrow's biography and answer a gist question. Next, there will be a focus on prepositions of time & place extracted from the text. The students do a matching activity about the prepositions. Finally, they write a autobiography of themselves.

Materials

Abc HOs, Extracts cut out from the course book; AK projected on the screen

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the learners will be better able to write an autobiography of themselves using the accuarate languge (i.e. tense & prepositions)

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the learners will have had a better understanding how prepositions of time and place are used in writing.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To activate Ss' existing knowledge of the topic and to generate in the theme of the lesson

* Ss are given a set of extracts and are told to put them in the correct time order. * Ss do this in groups of 3 (the 3 Ss sitting next to each other form a group). INSTRUCTIONS: * Work in groups of 3. * Put these sentences in the correct order. * Then guess who the person is. / He/She is in this room today. *2 min. THEN there is WC FB. T: The text is about "ME". T ELICITS the word biography/autobiography. *What is the word for this? 1. The story of your life when you rite it. 2. The story of your life when some else writes it.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • Ss will be exposed to a model of mini-biography through a reading (about Ed Murrow's life) to prepare for the tak and have amodel of the task

*Ss do a matching exercise. The items are mostly from the Ed Murrow text so that they won't worry about the unfamiliar vocab. *Ss read Ed Murrow's mini-biography (an extract from the course book) *Ss answer a gist Q. INSTRUCTIONS: *Read this biography. *"Why is Ed famous?" * 2 min. *Ss check in pairs. *The text exposes them to a model of biography, past tense forms, & prepositions of time & place.

Useful Language (5-8 minutes) • To provide, highlight, and clarify language that learners may find useful for completeing the writing

*Ss do an exercise about prepositions of time and place. *Ss's attention is also drawn to the tense of the verbs used in Ed's biography. INSTRUCTIONS: *CHESTING *For every gap/blank, there are 3 options. * Choose ONLY 1 of them. * 2 min. When they are done : *OK! Check your answers in pairs. *WC FB/AK on the board. * CLARIFY prepositions. *EXAMPLES ON THE BOARD/ MPF of the word "preposition".

Writing Task (10-12 minutes) • For learners to practice writing a mini-autobiography of themselves

*Ss are asked to write a mini-autobiography. INSTRUCTIONS: *Now on this piece of paper, write the story of your life, your auto-biography=Birthday, School, Moving to another city, University, Marriage, etc. *Use ONLY the past tense. *DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME ON IT!!! *You have 10 minutes. ICQs: *Do you write about yourself or someone else? MYSELF. *What tense do you use? Past, present, ...? PAST. *Do you write your name on your paper? NO!

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • For learners to compare results of the task, to get content feedback on the results and language feedback based on the task

*Ss fold their nameless writings and put them in a bag. *T takes the bag around the room. Every S picks a writing, and reads the biography and tries to find the writer. INSTRUCTIONS: *Put your paper in this bag. *(T takes the bag around the room Ss to pick one.) *Pick 1 paper. *Read it. *Find the writer. *Write his/her name on at the top of the paper. FB: T writes some of the mistakes that he noticed when he was monitoring. And tries to highlight & correct them with the help of the Ss.
