Olimpic Dreams
Intermediate, B1 level

Description

In this lesson students learn about sports in the context of Olympic dreams and they will practice action verbs which are used with the sports. The lesson starts with a warm up activity and continues with a sports video. After Ss watch the video, they will try to find out how many sports they have seen in the video. Then, they will practice the meaning of the target language with flashcards. Then they will drill the words and phrases for correct pronunciation and they will try to find out the form of these lexis. As controlled practice, they will be given a handout and they will practice the target language. Then they will continue with semi-controlled practice by writing about a sport in their groups. In the end they will discuss the questions written in the handout.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To create a warm atmosphere and to prepare them for the lesson, do some physical exercise with an enjoyable music. After this, make them groups by giving colours.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will watch a video about sports. They will try to remember how many sports they have seen in the video, GW. Then they will check as WC. Instructions: Watch the video and one person in the group will write down how many sports they have seen. The others in the group will help the person by telling the names of the sports. ICQs - Is it individual or in the group? - Is everybody writing or not? - What are the others going to do?

Focus on Meaning (Guided Discovery) (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the meaning and use of the target language

Show the sports flashcards to the class. Elicit background knowledge about olimpics and total sports. Elicit the meaning of unknown words. Use body languge, synonyms, or mimes and gestures to explain. Hang the action verbs on the board by eliciting with WC. Handout the flashcards for each group. Ss will put the sports under the correct verb. As one verb can be used for more than one sport, they will be able to add the others by writing. After they finish, check together.

Focus on Pronunciation (Guided Discovery) (5-7 minutes) • To highlight the phonological features of the target languge

T highlights and models the words for correct pronunciation. Drilling chorally and individually. Show phonemes by using colours to differentiate confusing words on the WB. Play the track 2.26. Ss will guess which sport is that. Individual. Check in pairs. WC check.

Focus on Form (Guided Discovery) (4-6 minutes) • To focus on the form of the Target Languge

Show action verbs, phrases and collocations. Elicit verb and noun forms and Uncountable, countables.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To practice on the form of the Target Languge

Ss will choose a sport and will write clear short information the sport. Give time to think and to write. (5 minutes) Don't tell the other groups. Write clear information with your group. A student who is going to read information in the group will hold the invisible ball and will pass the ball to a group who is supposed to guess the sport. There will be time limit and the group who holds the ball has to guess in 10 seconds. So they have to listen carefully. If they cannot guess after 10 seconds, they have pass the ball to another group. I will model the game with a group on the WB. Instructions: - Don't tell anyone - You have 10 seconds to guess. - If you cannot, pass the ball to another group. - If you know, read your information and pass the ball to another group.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will choose a sport and will write clear, short information about the sport. Give time to think and to write. (5 minutes) Instructions: - Don't tell the other groups. - Write clear and short information about the sport you have chosen. - Decide with your group. After they finish, tell them to follow next instructions: A student who is going to read information in the group will hold the invisible ball and will pass the ball to a group who is supposed to guess the sport. There will be time limit and the group who holds the ball has to guess in 10 seconds. So they have to listen carefully. If they cannot guess within10 seconds, they have to pass the ball to another group. I will model the game with a group on the WB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Look at the sports on the board and discuss the questions in the groups. Hand out / GW.
