Description

In this lesson, sts will be introduced in the lead-in to the context of New Year's resolutions and their future plans. Sts will learn about what New Year resolution's are and why we plan to do it. Students learn the meaning of words and use them to match the words (verbs) to phrases to make(verb collocation). Learning to talk about future plans and how to express their thoughts from practising in the lesson.

  • To provide specific information and detailed in the context of conversation about New Year resolution.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of verb-noun collocations about personal goals.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of future plans.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask ss what day is it? It is 30th of December and tomorrow is New years Eve 31st December. What do we celebrate on this special day every year? New years. Ask Ss to look at what's written next to the New Year. Ss read. I am going to travel more, I am going to change my job. Why did I write these phrases on the WB? Future plans Ask ss to discuss in pairs about their future plans for 2014. ICQ-Are we writing?No, Are we talking?Yes Elicit from ss and get them to write on WB. Read over the plans and comment on interesting answers with the class. (Teach ss that we use the word resolution when we want to make a promise to improve our life in some way).

Pre-LÄ°stening (8-10 minutes) • To introduce and clarify target lexis to prepare Ss for the listening.

On w/b have couple of examples of have more fun, ......... a holiday, get married, ......... a job Ask sts to match the phrase with the verb. Ask sts if they remember: two or more words/phrases that are commonly used...what do we call this? Collocation (remember from Brent's lesson on friday) the previous lesson Example;Elicit the phrases on WB and drill. HO1- Look at the first exercise. There is 2 columns.A & B. Work on your own and check if you know the 7 words in box A. Explain part A elicit from the sts and input some action. Match the words/phrases in box B with the verbs in bold Inform ss that the phrases in box are typical New Year's resolutions. Check and compare answers in pairs. Ss write answers on WB. Check meaning and drill the collocations with the class.

Listening 1 (5-7 minutes) • To give practice in listening for specific information.

WB-Focus ss on the picture and ask where the people are (at a New Year's Eve party). Then focus ss on pictures A-E and tell them that these are the people's New Year's resolutions. Go over the images to make sure ss understand what they are. R11.1 Play the recording. Ss listen and match the people to their resolutions. A-Holiday B-Australia C-Stop eating sweet thing D-computer course E- Stop smoking Check with your pairs. Questions to Elicit the answers to w/b.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To listen for detailed information

HO1. Exercise 2 (b) Ss read the text. Fill in gaps in the sentences with words from question1. Listen to R11.1 again and individually. Ss can compare answers in pairs. Check answers with the class. 2 holiday -3 move -4 computer course - 5 fit;smoking - 6 lose- 7 exercise- 8 sweet things Drill and stress the phrases.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target language skills in free conversation about future plans in the context of new year's party.

Ss pretend that they are at a New Year party and ask each other about future plans. New Year resolution. Example from the last exercise: Teacher with ss, Ss ask- Any New Year's resolution? T -Yes, I'm going to work less and have more fun. And what about you? Take in turns Ss in groups practise. Write on paper and stick on board for ss to read eachothers plans.
