Description

Students will listen for a gist and then for details to an authentic material (youtube vlog) about travelling. They will learn some new lexis and then practice new vocabulary doing exercises and speaking.

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about travelling in the context of advice from expirienced traveler

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of transportation in the context of travelling
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of travelling

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher set up the context. What is more important when you travel? A good service or a low price? Elicit answers. Teacher's story about travelling. How do you usually travel? By bus, train, plane... Which do you prefer? Pair work. Talk to your partner about your travelling experience. Feedback. Ask students to tell what they have learned about their friends' travelling preferences?

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teaching vocabulary (phrases from a listening text). Printable strips with words. Ask them to find pairs which make a sence. Three teams work at different tables. Pairs: to adjust \ plans, round\trip, budget \ airlines, to book \ an accommodation, off \ season, 4 hours \ layover, direct \ flights, overnight \ trains, to rent a car, checked\ baggage, boarding\pass. Feedback. They check other peers' answers. Display correct ones. Find how many mistakes they've made. Clarify MFP.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Listen and make notes what kind of transport are mentioned in the video? What countries or cities can you hear? Play accord. Peer checking. Feedback. Write answers on a board.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Sts get handouts including a task "Fill in the gaps", work solo. Give 1 minute to read them. Then play the record. Pair check. Display sentences. And ask them to write correct answers. Listen again and check correct answers. Feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (14-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Give sts a map. Two friends are planning a trip to Turkey. The come from. Give them advice what types of transport should they use and why? How should they travel within cities? Ideas. Maybe hitchhike? Ride a bike? Write a short list. 2. When they are ready - tell about your ideas to other groups. 4. Discuss together which advice were the best one and why. Feedback.
