Procedure (43-55 minutes)
Show Ss the two pictures. Tell them to work with a partner for 2 minutes and answer the questions in the HO. "How do you think these people feel? Which of these houses would you prefer to live in? Why? How about you? Who do you live with? Do you get on well or argue about anything?" Elicit W/c feedback after 2 min.
Show Ss the reading. "It is about young people who live with their parents." "You have 2 minutes to read the article quickly. Find out how many of them want to leave home." Quick w/c feedback. Show Ss the HO with questions. "Have a look at these questions about the people in the text. Who is described here?" "Now re-read the article and answer these questions." Hand in the questions to Ss. Ss peer-check upon completing the task. Provide answer keys for self-feedback.
Target language will be clarified by means of guided dicovery handouts on meaning, form, and pronunciation. Show Ss the guided discovery handout on meaning. Demonstarte the task going through the example. "These are some sentences from the text. Answer these questions about them here. For example..." Elicit 'second conditional': "This kind of sentence is called_____" "There is another question here at the bottom. Circle the correct word in bold." Ss work in pairs to answer the questions. Monitor. Note particular points of incomprehension. Provide Ss with the answer key and address any questions Ss might have. Show Ss the guided discovery handout on form. Read the sentence. "Write this sentence using the second conditional. Use the words here and fill in the blanks." Ss work in pairs. Monitor. Elicit W/C feedback. Hand Ss the guided discovery handout on pronunciation. Elicit response in W/C. Drill the sentences chorally.
Show Ss the folded handout. "Do not look at the other half yet." "Put the verbs in the right tense". Demonstrate with the example. "Learn another language if I have more time" Elicit the answer: "I'd learn another language if I had more time." Ss work on the exercise individually. Monitor. Ss peer-check after they finish. Project the exercise onto the board. Invite Ss to fill it out. Tell Ss to unfold the handout and match the endings to the sentences on the board. Monitor. Ss peer-check. W/C feedback and record the answers on the board.
Re-group Ss. Ask Ss "What would you do with it if I gave you 5 million liras?" Each group must write a list of five things. Monitor. Groups read out their list. The class decides who gets the money.
"Think of some of the things you want to change about your life. Tell your partner about it. Ask what he/she thinks about your problem. Explain how things would be different if you made the change. Ask what he/she thinks about it. Ask advice: what would he/she do? Change roles." Demonstrate the above pattern with a Ss in front of the w/b. Explain it verbally after the demonstartion if necessary. Change roles with the Ss and listen to their problem. "I have a problem. Can I tell you about it? I am really not happy with my job. I doesn't pay well and I work until very late. I want to quit my job. If had more time, I would go to the gym everyday and be healtier. I feel so unhealty. But I did not save any money. If I saved some money, I would quit my job. What do you think? What would you do if you were me?" After demonstartion ask Ss to stand up and mingle and start the activity with different partners.
