Main Aims

To provide practice in listening for scanning and listening for gist,using the context of the 'maps & the locations'
Subsidiary Aims

To teach & provide clarification of meanings of various words and phrases from the text, İdeally through deductive inference from text.
Procedure (39-50 minutes)
-Ask SS if they like using maps and if they find them easy to use. -Before giving the HO#1 to the SS give clear instructions : 'Work in pairs,look at the map and discuss this question ( In what ways is this map different from a traditional world map?) Answer: The map is upside down.It shows the world with the south at the top rather than the north. It is a south-is-up map found on a website called 'Mapping the World'.
-Stick the lexis from the text on the WB -Try o elicit the meanings of the words from learners before giving them directly: 'Can you guess / agree on the meaning of ..?' -Before teaching the meaning drill the pronunciation
-Point out the the magnified areas on the map. -Tell the SS: ' You're going to listen to to 2 friends discussing the map and you need to match these magnified areas to the list of reasons why they have been highlighted.' -Use ICQs for clearer understanding: e.g.Are you going to listen the dialogue for detailed comprehension? No Are you going to scan ?Yes Are you going to match the magnified areas to the reasons? Yes -Give SS ex 2 -Listening -Ask SS to check their answers in pairs -Check the answers with the WC -Answers: 1-D KOH TAO 2- B NEW ZEALAND 3- E ZAMBUJEIRA 4- A WASHINGTON 5- C MELBOURNE
- SS listen to the recording again and choose the correct answers. -Ask SS to compare their answers with a partner before checking with the class -ANSWERS: 1- on the internet 2-turn the map around in his head 3-change 4-in Melbourne 5-with some friends 6-good 7-weeks 8-does not plan
