Listening Task + Vocab. (TP1a)
Upper-Intermediate B2 level

Description

In this lesson, students will do a listening task. They will listen to a recording about a very old painting. They will predict content, find the gist (compare what they discussed beforehand with what they hear in the audio). They will then do some personalized speaking related to the topic and finish with a voc. extension task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To practice Ss' skills of listening for gist & detailed information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with speaking practice in a personaized way & focus on metaphors in a student-centered way

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context, engage students, and open up areas of doubt (J J Wilson, How to teach listening)

T will hand out cut-out pics of the painting (on p. 42) to Ss and ask them to discuss in groups what's happening in the picture.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To listen to what Ss have to say.

T runs feedback. / OR maybe no whole-class feedback as the gist listening will serve as the feedback (Source: Marijke; Lesson Plan Sample)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide Ss with gist listening

Listen to the audio (#1) and check if your guesses match the audio content.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

Ss listen and fill in the gaps with appropriate words from the audio (CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS & ICQs NEEDED).

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In groups, Ss ask and answer the Qs in part 4. For question 4, T gives them a picture of Harry Houdini (a famous magician & illusionist, born as Eric Weis). T monitors and helps in case of a breakdown. T encourages Ss to ask follow-up questions.
