Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of past and present tenses in the context of telling a story.

Procedure

Lead in (8-10 minutes) • To activate students' schemata

Tr begins a class by telling a story using VCOP, relative pronouns and clauses and past and present tenses. Tr instructs SSs to write down the key ideas of the story. Once the story is narrated, Ss are asked questions on what they heard. For example:

Less controlled Speaking Practice (13-15 minutes) • To use certain attributes of a story hand (characters) and re create a story.

Tr divides the class into groups and instructs the Ss to change two characters in the story that she narrated at the beginning of the class. Tr instructs them to change the ending as well. Ss are encouraged to note down only words or key ideas of their story. Tr. displays a kind of a mind map which will help Ss to note down key ideas. Each group then presents their story in front of the class. Tr notes down errors and delayed error correction is done.

Language Input (10-15 minutes) • To review present and past tenses in the context of storytelling.

Example sentences and time lines in the present simple, present continuous, present perfect, present perfect continuous , past simple, past continuous and past perfect are displayed on the IWB. Tr. asks Ss to read each sentence, identify the tense and explain when they would use a particular tense. At this stage tr. clarifies any questions SS have on the use of different tenses.

Restricted Speaking Task (7-8 minutes) • To identify the different tenses in the sentences. To check Ss understanding of the tenses.

A quiz is conducted. Tr reads sentences in different tenses and aks Ss to identify the tenses used in the sentences. The group that gets the maximum number of tenses right is the winner.

Restricted Written Practice (10-15 minutes) • To practice writing the story in the present tense.

Tr. instructs Ss to write the story she narrated in the present tense. Ss write the story in pairs. They present or share their stories in class. Tr notes down errors while Ss write the story and also when they present it to the class. Delayed error correction is done. Tr writes down incorrect sentences on the board and asks Ss to correct them. She encourages them to justify their answers .

Freer Speaking Practice (17-20 minutes) • To create a story using VCOP, story hand, relative clauses and pronouns.

Warmer: Tr gives each group a picture and asks them to note down words related to it. Ss share their answers with the class Task: Tr. then instruct Ss to create a story using the picture. Tr. also instructs them to use relative pronouns and clauses, story hand and VCOP in their story. Ss are instructed to note down only words and not write the entire story. Once the task is completed, Ss present it to the class with proper pronunciations and voice modulation.

Evaluate (13-15 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of the task. To maximize Ss’ involvement in error correction and feed back.

Each S is given a rubric to evaluate other Ss when they present their story. They share their rubrics in their groups and come to a common conclusion about the other groups. They swap the rubrics, share and justify their evaluation. Tr. makes notes when Ss present their stories and also monitors them when they are preparing their story. Delayed error correction is done.

Freer Speaking Task (9-10 minutes)

Ss swap their stories in groups. They are instructed to change the ending, time and setting of the story and present it to the class. Once the task is completed, Ss present the story to the class. Whole class feedback is done where in tr. corrects the tenses used in the story if required.

Recap (4-5 minutes) • To review the lesson and tasks done in class.

Tr questions Ss: What are the different elements or things you will use to write or create an interesting story? Worksheet on tenses is given as home work.
