To provide clarification and practice of prepositions of time "in, on, at" in the context of holidays and special days.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency speaking practice in using prepositions of time in the context of personal activites and holidays.
Procedure (47-60 minutes)
A brief discussion, in w/c, about the favorite holidays or special days. "Which is your favorite holiday?" "When is it?" "Which month?" "What date?" Show a Halloween picture. Elicit what holiday is it? "Do you know when is Halloween?"
Show HO. Explain the exercise is about another special day. Tell Ss to underline the correct preposition. "Is it in or on?" "Underline the correct one." Monitor. Ss peer-check. Get Ss on the the board to write the correct answer for feedback. Keep a record of it on w/b.
Draw a multi-pointed star on the board with dates, days, times written on the end points. Ss work in pairs very briefly and note down which prepositions match with which words. Monitor. Draw a chart with 3 columns on w/b: in, on, at. Take W/C feedback to fill out the chart. Elicit Ss response to find out the common categories: months, years, days... "March is the third ______ of the year?" "Winter is one of the four________" "Monday is the first_______ of the week." Examples: I read in the evenings. (CCQ: Is the evening part of the day? Yes) I sleep at night. (CCQ: Between 11:00PM & 07:00AM) I rest at the weekend. (CCQ: Sat & Sun. Unified time.) I go to work on Mondays. (CCQ: Is Monday one of the days of the week? Yes.)
Adapt SsBK Grammar ex. Show Ss HO. Explain that they will complete sentences that are true about themselves. Demonstrate. "For example, I usually relax on Sundays." "What about you?" Ss work indivudually. When they finish tell them to get up and walk around in the class to ask each other questions to learn what they do when. "What about you?" Monitor.
Put the dates of some official holidays on w/b. "1 Jan, 30 Aug, 1 May." Elicit they are official holidays. Elict what people celebrate on these days. Mark this category as official holiday. Write "New Holiday?" Provide an example: Jan 10. Skiing day. "On this day, people go skiing." Elicit something of this sort if you can. Explain them to decide on 3 dates. "What date is it?" "What holiday is it? "What people do on these days?" "Our idea for a new holiday is....... It is on ............ On this day, people ..............." Ss discuss in gruops. Monitor for language for delayed correction.
