A reading and vocabulary lesson in the context of houseswaps

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for gist and spesific information in the context of houseswaps

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking with the new vocabulary in the context of houseswaps

Procedure

Warm Up (10-12 minutes) • To familiarize students with the target vocabulary and help them to gain insight into the reading text

Teacher writes target vocabulary on the board without an order and ask students if they know their meanings. Students think about it in pairs. Then with the use of some images, teacher explains the new adjectives to the students.

Controlled Activity (5-5 minutes) • To strengten the knowledge from the previous activity

Teacher gives the handout to the students and asks them to match the adjectives to their opposites. Students work in pairs. Teacher monitors the students and provides help if needed.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To give students feedback on the language used

Students share their answers with the rest of their classmates.

Listening (4-5 minutes) • To develop the student's listening skills through the proper use of English

Students listen to the recording and underline what they hear on the handout. They work in pairs. Teacher monitors the students and provides help if needed.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To give students feedback on the language used

Students share their answers with the rest of the class, teacher elicits the answers.

Freer Activity (5-6 minutes) • To strenghten the language learned in the previous activities through personalization

Teacher re-groups the students and tells them to complete the sentences in pairs. Teacher monitors the students and provides help if needed.

Pre-reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students to the reading material

Teacher asks the students if they know what houseswap or swap means, and explains the word to the students through a little role play activity.

Reading (10-12 minutes) • To develop reading skill for general understanding

Teacher gives the students new handouts. Students read the text and match pictures with texts. They work in groups of 3-4 people. Teacher monitors them in the meantime and provides help when needed.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To give students feedback on the previous activity

Teacher shows the pictures to students and asks them to tell which number they matched to it.

Speaking (4-5 minutes) • To practice with the vocabulary and lexis learned in the previous activities

Teacher re-groups students and asks them to talk about which house they like the most and which one they would like to live in. They work in groups of 3-4 people.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To give students feedback on the previous activity

Teacher asks students which house(s) they like the most and why. Students share their answers with their classmates. Teacher elicits and corrects them when needed.
