Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide product writing practice of metaphor in the context of vacation
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Tell me about your week off. Who traveled? Who stayed home? Adventure? How did you spend your time? Are you happy to be back at school?
Slide show: Mary Kingsley, Democratic Republic of the Congo (has anyone been to Africa?), Talagouga. Ask students if they would want to travel here. Do you think Mary Kingsley was happy to go through here? What would you expect to find here? Talk in pairs
After forming ideas about what it would be like in Talagouga, students read the passage by themselves and determine if their predictions were correct. If so, how, if not, then what?
Give students list of questions to pair with the reading. Have them read through again to get correct answers. Peer check, class check.
Look at sentence ex. "plantain leaves seemed to stand sleeping day out and day in" Do leaves sleep? What type of speech is this? Define a metaphor, give examples. Students create a metaphor based on something from break. Students share metaphors
