Description

In this lesson the students will be practising their listening and speaking. We will start with speaking practice and this will help me get in to my main aim. The students will be listening about a booking a flight ticket.

Materials

Abc Straightforward Intermediate Student book
Abc Hand outs, listening text

Main Aims

  • to improve their listening skills on a context of a phone call about enquiring about a long-distance flight.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to get the students to practice their speaking in a context of conversation about enquiring about flight ticket cost.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss the following question: **What can travel agents do to help you? FB: WC

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will give them a small HO to match the words / expressions with their definitions in pair work. This will help me make the students be familiar with the new words in the typescript. FB: AK to be provided (on WB).

While Listening #1 (gist listening) (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening task

I will tell them that they are going to listen to the beginning of a conversation between a flight agent and a customer about a flight booking. I will give them a HO ask them to do Exercise 1. FB: WC

While Listening #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task

The Ss will be listening the whole conversation to do Exercise 2 alone. Then they will be asked to check their answers with their partners. They will listen the record again if necessary. FB: WC (projector to be used for FB)

While Listening #3 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed task

The students will be asked to work in pairs and do Exercise 3. I will be monitoring them very closely. If they are unable to answer the questions i will get them to listen the related parts of the record. If they are ok with the questions, I will use the projector to put the typescript on WB and ask them to show me the answers on WB.

Post Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Role-play. I will nominate 3 students as travel agent and give them an airline ticket fare card. They are required to give the potential customers information about ticket price. The rest of the class will be customers, I will provide a role-card to each "customer" and a blank ticket fare information card. I will ask them to fill it out while talking to the travel agents. The travel agents will have a seat and the customers will be moving around to find the best deal for their air ticket. FB: I will be monitoring them closely, and will be asking couple of them about their findings.
