Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past simple tense. The lesson presents and overview in the context of memories from school days. The lesson is made up of a lead in based on photographs of activities linked to school days, presentation of MFP followed up by some controlled practice activities.

Materials

  • To give students with clarification, review and practice of simple past in the context of memories of school

  • Speaking practice within the context of memories from school

Procedure

Lead in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Re-introduce topic of school. Exercise 1 - in pairs students match photos of activities with the written sentences. - whole class feedback to fill in answers on board

Meaning (2-3 minutes) • To provide meaning of the target language through a text or situation

Show Meaning slide - who is this guy? (it's me) - is it today? When? (no, it's school time) - is it past or present? (it's past) - is it finished? (yes it is)

Form 1 - regular endings (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language/pronunciation

Show verbs on projector. - Set task - fill in the gaps with past tense - How? In pairs? Use the text to help you. Model example with class - 2 minutes - did you find them - nominate 1 answer from each table - fill in text box with each response - drill for pronunciation

Form 2 - endings/negatives/questions (5-8 minutes) • Further analysis of Past simple structures

Whole class brainstorm - work through the rules on the board - endings - negatives (examples) - question forms (examples)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Practice exercises: - Exercise 3 is a dialogue - fill in the gaps with your partner, you have two minutes Now check with the other pair on your table - Answer collection - again, nominate tables for answers and check with whole class. - Fill in gaps on board

Semi-Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

dialogue time students create their own conversations using questions provided - write some answers to these questions (model one on board) 2 minutes (quietly) - check they have finished, then start next step - in pairs, ask and answer each others questions - you have a few minutes to practice - collect feedback by walking around - now use your new information to ask another student

Final words (2-3 minutes) • To summarise the class and give out handouts
