Animals (Extended) Lesson 1 (14.02.2017) - D. C. Demirezen
A1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about eight distinct animals and the sounds they make through materials tailored accordingly. There will also be certain activities that will insure the learners reinforce all of the acquired lexicon throughout the lesson.

Materials

Abc Cardboard

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a gamified setting in the context of animals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a short story (text) about animals.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The instructor initiates the lesson by telling the students that they will listen to a song about animals. During the video, instructor pauses the song with each animal, and sticks the relevant visual onto the board without giving out a name and later the song continues. With each name, instructor writes the names of the animals under the visuals one by one. When the song is over, the learners assign species-oriented moves to each animal (Justification: for the upcoming short story activity).

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The instructor points out to animals and mimic the moves of the animals, expecting the class to name each one chorally. During this stage, students are divided into two (boys and girls) and the instructor asks these groups to name the animals seperately and together from time to time.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

TASK 1: Drawing an animal based on the name written on one side of the index card distributed by the instructor. Positive Reinforcement = Stickers for each correct drawing (10 mins) TASK 2: There will be two teams based on given numbers and each team will compete in order to put the correct name on the whiteboard under the required animal. Praise Form = Whole Class Clapping (10 mins)

Final Reinforcement (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' comprehension of target language

The instructor reads a short story to the whole class. Before the reading session begins, all the animals' species-related moves will be practiced for the final time. While listening to the story, the students will act out the moves whenever an animal's name is mentioned.
