To clarify and practice used to + infinitive in listening and writing activities in the context of making a life change.
Procedure (5-82 minutes)
The lesson starts with a game. Tr reads out a few sentences and asks Ss to say whether they are correct or incorrect. The Ss are made to stand in the middle of the class. If the sentence is correct, they move to the right. If it is incorrect, they move to the left.
Ss are given 2 HOs. Ss are instructed to match the sentences with the correct tense and stick it on the second HO.
PC is done. During WCFB, SS share their answers. The different tenses - their meaning, form and use are discussed.
Recent pictures of JK Rowling and Christin Ronaldo are shown. Ss are asked to discuss the following questions n pairs: What are they famous for? Then Ss are shown pictures of the same people in the past. What were they like then? How have they changed?

Ss are asked to identify the functions of words in bold from the reading passage. Tr. says that certain verbs are used with prepositions. Tr. asks Ss to note down a few phrases (verbs+prepositions) . Ss share their answers with the class. Ss are then instructed to make sentences with a few phrases that they noted down. PC and WCFB are done.
Ss are asked to look at the pictures displayed o the IWB and discuss the following question: What life changes do you think these women have made? Ss discuss in pairs and share their answers with the class.

A few example sentences (from the listening activity) are displayed on the IWB. Jasmin Wellis used to work as a doctor in York. CCQs Is this sentence in the past tense? Does she still work as a doctor? Was it a habit or was it a situation? Can you rewrite this sentence in the past simple? Yes She worked as a doctor in York. I never used to eat chocolate. Is this in the present or past? Is it a habit or a situation? How will we change this sentence into a question sentence? Did you use to eat chocolate? Is this in the present or past? Can we use used to describe a situation or habit in the present? No Pronunciation: Jasmin Wellis used to work as a doctor in York. I never used to eat chocolate. Tr says the sentences and Ss reapeat after her. Tr marks the weak and strong forms in the sentences on the board. Form: Tr writes the form of the sentences on the board.
