Main Aims
-
by the end of the lesson, the Ss will have had the opportunity to do listening with an attempt at gist listening, but with the main focus on listening for specific information.
Subsidiary Aims
-
They will also have had the chance to speak about the topics introduced in the listening audio tracks with the aim of fluency.
Procedure (37-50 minutes)
to lead in the ss, two main questions will be asked from the ss, 1- How do you prefer to find information? on the Internet or boos or by asking people? what does it depend on? 2- what types of questions do children usually ask? this stage will attempt to ready the Ss for the listening subject which is about inquiries. this will happen in a WC engagement format.
In this stage, two vocabularies will be introduced to the Ss. 1- Inquiry /ɪnˈkwʌɪri/ 2- investigation /ɪnˌvɛstɪˈgeɪʃ(ə)n/. Two ccqs will be asked for each word. 1- (Inquiry) so do we make an inquiry when we know something? 2- when do we use it? and for investigation 1- what do we usually investigate for? 2- do we investigate something we are sure about?
The ss will be exposed to a short listening recorded by the teacher. Before starting, they will be asked to listen to the tape and try to find out what the main subject of the track was. No ICQs needed here as it's a pretty straight forward task. The track will then be played once only. Afterwards, the ss will be paired up based on their sitting and given one minute to talk about their understanding with a partner. one nominated Ss will answer and the teacher will check the understanding of others in WC.
The ss will be divided into groups of three. The words" Beatles" ( with the CCQs of 1- did they play music? 2- were they a group or just one person? 3- are they still active?) and "volcano" ( CCQs 1- does it look like a mountain? 2- what comes out of a volcano?) will be introduced to the Ss. they will be instructed to listen to the track and put the sentences in order. They will perform the task alone. A demo will be done by the teacher with the big cut outs for the ss to better understand the task. two ICQS will be asked in this stage. 1- are we doing the task alone or in our groups? 2- how will we arrange the sentences? After the sentences are played, the ss will have the opportunity to check in their groups to check if they have the correct answers. in this stage, the teacher will monitor closely and decide whether or not it is needed to play the tape one more time. At the end, nominated Ss will come to the board to put the big cutouts in the order they should be in. An AK will be given to the Ss, which they will also use in the following speaking part.
In their designated groups, Ss will be instructed to discuss the questions and try to answer them and write down their answers on the previously distributed answer sheet. One ICQs needed in this stage, are we just talking about our ideas or will we write them? A demo will be done by the teacher in this stage. The teacher will monitor closely and note any examples of error or good use of language.
The ss will be instructed to listen to the audio track and complete the notes they are to be given. for this part they will be working alone. A demo will be given by the teacher for the ss to understand exactly what it is that they are to do in this part. The handouts will be distributed in this stage. the audio track will be played and ss will attempt to complete the notes. close monitoring will be required to check if the ss are getting the answers correct or not. The recording will be played for a second time. the ss will check if they have the same answers in their groups. Then, they will take turns to come to the board and answer the questions on the board for FB.
The ss will be divided into two groups. the first group will be instructed to extract the predictions made by the man for the questions and the second group will be instructed to note down the predictions made by the woman on the tape. Three ICQs will be asked: 1- how many people talking on the tape? 2- how many making predictions? 3- are we going to write all predictions or just the one for our group?. a demo will be performed by the teacher. After listening and giving the answers, they will have a chance to check with their group members, and then they will compare their answers with the other group.
The Ss will be divided into groups of three, in which they will discuss what their initial guess was about the questions, why they thought so and was it the same as they heard or different no ICQs needed here. The teacher is to monitor very closely and note down any cases of errors or good use of language.
the teacher will convert the notes he has made in the two speaking parts to the board. both errors and good examples of language usage will be put on the board and the teacher will try to extract the correct forms from the ss to provide delayed feedback and error correction.
