Description

In this lesson,students learn and practice vocabulary of family members. They also practice reading for gist and details by reading a text about family. The lesson starts with introducing the topic to students by using photos of famous characters in movies to review the vocabulary of family members and teach them some of the new vocabulary they will need. This is followed by reading the text as the students read first time to get gist of the text, while the second time to search for specific information and fill the gaps. Students divided into groups and choose famous twins to talk about. After the meaning and the pronunciation of vocabulary are clarified, students practice family vocabulary in a freer practice, where they can describe their families.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students some photos of movies. Ask Ss to guess the relationship between the people in the photos. Elicit the different kinds of relationships shown in the photos. Ask CCQs to check the meaning.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask Ss what they notice about Peter and John. Explain the meaning of identical twins. Ask Ss to read the text.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask Ss to read the text. Ask them to name the people in the photograph Ss check together and then the T checks with the whole class. Explain the two types of twins: identical and fraternal.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Divide Ss to work in groups and choose one famous twins to talk about by using simple sentences. T check with the whole class

Vocabulary Focus (5-8 minutes) • To learn and practice the vocabulary in the context of the reading text

Make sure that Ss understand the meaning of family words in table. Make sure that Ss pronounce all the words properly. Ask Ss to complete the table with the other names. Allow them to compare notes in pairs. Check with the whole class.

Speaking • Practice vocabulary of family in a freer practice

SS describe their families and tell others about them.
