Description

In this lesson, students will read a text about Antonio's house, They will have tasks for gist and for comprehension followed by writing exercise then free practice.

Main Aims

  • Reading a text for gist and specific details about Antonio's house in Barcelona.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking and writing about what they like about Antonio's house then students will speak and write about their own houses.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • to activate students existing knowledge of the topic and to generate interest in the topic of the lesson

I'll show students a picture of a house. Then I'll tell them I stayed in this house for two weeks. I liked it so much then ask students " do you like ? why ? "

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • to pre-teach key lexis needed to help students understand the listening

upstairs, downstairs, fireplace, stereo : visuals to show the meaning huge : CCQs : what's the opposite of small ? [big] very big is huge.

reading for gist (2-3 minutes) • to encourage Ss to read for gist

ask the students " what's this text talking about ? 1) Antonio's house 2) Antonio's university 3) Antonio's best friend " give the students 1 minute to read the text quickly to answer this question.

reading for specific information (4-6 minutes) • to practice reading for specific information ( scanning)

give students handout that has true or false questions. Ask them to answer questions individually then in pairs then WC feedback if there's a common hard question,

reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • to practice reading for detailed comprehension

give students questions then ask them to read the text and answer these questions individually. check in pairs then in groups then WC feedback.

reading for inference (4-5 minutes) • to practice reading for inferred meanings.

give the students two questions to ask individually then check in pairs then in groups.

Speaking and writing practice (3-5 minutes) • to practice speaking about the text

ask students "why do you like Antonio's house? " then ask them to write 3 sentences about Antonio's house. I'll write on WB " I like Antonio's house because -------- " after that I'll ask them to speak about it in pairs.

Writing and speaking practice (10-15 minutes) • to practice writing and speaking about their own houses

give each student a paper. Ask them to not write their names on this paper. Ask students to write 6 sentences about their houses. Then I'll stick these papers on the wall then ask each student to find out whose house is this ? then I can ask them "whose house do you like the most ? why ?"
