Materials

Abc Intro video
Abc True to Life audio recording
Abc Handouts and answer sheets

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, ss will have had the opportunity to practise listening to a text for gist, specific information and detailed comprehension in the context of things that people find annoying

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, ss will have had the opportunity to practise speaking in the context of things that annoy them

Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic and activate existing knowledge

Ss told to watch the video and think about what the things the person in it is doing. Afterwards, ss told to work in pairs to discuss some of the things that the person did to annoy his colleague. A few examples are elicited from the WC.

Pre-teach vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To pre-teach/unblock key lexis required to understand text

Ss complete gap fill exercise A on HO in pairs. FB given through placing image on OHP and eliciting the answers. Briefly clarify any TL students are uncertain about ("gets to me" as an informal way of saying "angers me" in this context, or provoking an emotional response, e.g. a romantic film "got to me"). CCQ: If I say "I am annoyed" does it mean the same thing as "I am annoying"? (no - one is a verb and one an adjective). CCQ: If I do this [mime annoying someone], am I irritating [s's name]? (yes) CCQ: Am I also irritating? (probably!).

Listening for gist (4-4 minutes) • For students to get an overview of the text through listening for general information

Part B of HO. Students told to listen to the audio file and as they do to think about which mode of transport most of the people are talking about (trains).

Listening for specific information (6-7 minutes) • Ss to further familiarise themselves with the listening text

Ss told to listen again to the recording and answer true/false questions (part C) on HO. They can check in pairs and then check answer key.

Listening for detail (10-10 minutes) • For learners to understand the listening text in depth

Ss told to listen for a final time to the recording. As they do so, they should try to note down the different ways in which people begin to speak about what annoys them: The thing that annoys me // The thing I find most irritating // The thing that really annoys me // The thing that really gets to me // The thing that gets me // The thing that I find irritating // What really annoys me. Check in pairs. Elicit some from the class and drill a couple of times. Ss then told to look at the transcript to see all of the examples and have the opportunity to explore the listening text further should they wish to.

Speaking task (10-13 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and use the language productively

Ss given HO2, The Big Annoying Survey, and told to interview as many of their classmates as they can to find out what annoys them most and why. At the end, a few examples are elicited from the WC. T asks what the most common answer was. FINALLY: T tells class what the most annoying thing is to him...
