Hand out the story and refer to the first highlighted verb "wanted". Then ask SS to read it and underline the rest of the past simple verbs in the passage. Demo a couple of examples with them. ICQs: Will you underline all verbs or past verbs? Past verbs How many minutes do you have? 2 mins Divide them into pairs and monitor their work. SS then check in pairs. Present an answer key on the board.
Refer to ex 2a then elicit the differences between the present and past tenses. Then stick some cards with the past verbs in the text, and ask SS to hit the past form of the verb they hear using fly swatters. Begin by writing these sentences on the board: I wasn't happy yesterday. I didn't help my mother yesterday. Explain that both are in the past, then encourage SS to guess the difference. Then introduce the questions. Drill and back-chain. Refer to ex C p 55 and demonstrate on the board the first two sentences. Demonstrate the first two examples and ask SS to continue the rest individually then check in pairs. Provide an answer key on the projector.
(T refers back to exC pg 45) T asks students to listen carefully in order to figure out the ending of the story. T asks students: "Where are they?" " Are they in Canada?" Then T divides students to pairs. T tells the students to ask his/her pair 5 questions from the list. Then T changes pairs and asks the students to ask the other 5 questions. ICQs.
T hands out the card set to SS, T then divides SS into groups of three and asks them to arrange the cards into the correct order then tell Steve's story in the past tense.
