Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Meeting famus people
  • To provide review of past forms in the context of meeting famous people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To get the SS engaged in the topic I would ask Students "why they would want to meet a famous person" thus creating a link between the text and the topic of the lesson to come. Teacher would write this question on the w/b and get students to discuss the question in pairs. After, each pair would share there opinions. 1) Write " Why do you want to meet a famous person?" on the W/B 2) The Teacher can give an example by giving there own opinion on why you want to meet a famous person, so that students have an example. -" I would like to meet a famous person because they remind me of my childhood, I use to always watch them as a child and it made me very happy as a child. 3) Put students in pairs and tell them to discus about this question in there pairs. - " In pairs I would like you to discuss this question and come up with your own opinions on why" 4) Each pair (or if the group is big then only some of the pairs) will share there opinions and there quick discussion about the question with the class. - "Can you please share with the class why you want to meet a famous person" 5) Teacher should try and create a quick group discussion so that everyone is involved

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

This would be activity 2. In this activity students will discuss questions in pairs and answer them. 1) Give Instructions. - " In Pairs you will answer the questions on this handout (Showing it at the same time) - " The first part you will just write the names down and in the second part you will discuss the questions with your partner and answer the questions" 2) Put Students in pairs and Give the handout to students 3) Ask Students to share there answers - Teacher takes notes of errors 4) Feedback: Teacher goes through any common errors of form and meaning.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Activity 3 - Prediction Task of the reading text In this activity students will look at the headline of the text. The last part of the headline is cut of. Students will have to make predictions of what happened. "MET WALT DISNEY is what is covered from the headline" 1) Tell students that they will be given a headline of the text they will read and that they will have to fill in the missing words from the headline. Guessing is fine. -"I will not give you this handout. There is a headline on this. The last part is covered. You have to guess what the last missing words could be" 2) Give students activity 3 and give them 2-3 minutes to guess "You will have 3 minutes to read the headline and write what you think the missing words are. 3) Ask students to share there answers - " Can you share with the class what your guess / prediction is 4) Tell students that you will give the text and that they should quickly read (Scan) the text to see if there ideas where correct and if not then fill in the missing words correctly. -" Now I will give each of you the text of this headline. I would like you to read this quickly to see if your predictions was correct". - " If it was not correct then write down the correct missing words" 5) Get SS to share there answers and if none of them got it correct then the teacher should give the answer. "Now that you have read and had a look at the text, what are the missing words from the headline" 6) Quick feedback of any common mistakes on Form, Meaning and Pronunciation

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Activity 4- Comprehension questions. Students will have to read the text/ Reading in more detail and answer the questions 1) Give Students the instructions for the activity and then students the handout with the questions (Activity 4) -" You will now read the text and answer these questions (Showing the handout with questions) 2) Read the questions and make sure the students understand. " Now before reading the text, Look at the questions and see if there is anything you do not understand about the questions" - "After answering any questions if there is tell SS " Now read the text and answer the questions" -Monitor students doing the activity and help students if they have not understood something. Help when necessary 3) Bring the class back together and ask SS to share the answers with the class. - As students answer. Approve it is the correct answer first before writing the answer on the W/B. - If the answer is incorrect or not relevant ask another SS to give there answer of the question 4) Feedback: On Form and pronunciation

Post-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Activity 5- Grammar Activity. - Here we are looking at the language in the text. 1) Tell students that they will have to fill in the missing words which are from the text. - Tell SS they have to turn over the reading text (As they can just look for the answers) - " Can you all turn over the reading" - " Fill in the missing words from the handout" - Give SS the handout 2) Monitor SS and help when required. 3) Bring the class back together and ask SS to share the answers with the class. - As students answer. Approve it is the correct answer first before writing the answer on the W/B. - If the answer is incorrect or not relevant ask another SS to give there answer of the question 4) Draw SS attention to past forms. " Ask SS " What for are all of these words) -Past simple, Past continuous. 5) Make sure SS know why some are past simple & Continuous. - Explaining the grammar rule 6) Feedback on FORM.

Post Reading #2 (10-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Activity 6. 1) Teacher will give photos of 5 Turkish and 5 International Famous people " Here are some famous people from Turkey and from around the world" 2) Tell SS - " You have to choose 1 famous person and imagine that you have met them" - Here SS choose there celebrity 3) " Using this handout, you will write 5 important point about the interaction with this famous person you have chosen" While showing " There are 2 questions here that will help you" 4) Monitor as Students do the activity. - Check to see that all SS are doing this correctly. 5) Now tell SS " Now everyone stand up. Everyone find someone and share your experiences of meeting your famous person. - Give activity 7 to SS and say "these are some helpful questions to ask your partner" - You should ask these question and any more that you can think of to your partner and then switch roles, so both of you answer the questions and share your experience on meeting the famous person you have chosen" 6) Feedback: I would correct the errors identified and provide important guidelines to students for preventing them from the same mistakes in future.
