Have you ever attended any sports events? What were they? Did you enjoy them? Are they important events? If so, how are they important? Ss look at the photos, tell me the names of the sports they show. Can you identify the famous events? (teacher doesn't give away the answers.) Ss look through the text quickly and to match the photos and check their predictions. (Teacher shows the answers on the board.) What else do you know about the events?
Exercise 1b- Ss read and listen to complete the text with the missing months and years. Then they compare answers in pairs. Ss listen again and check their answers.
Exercise 2a - Ss work in groups of four. Teacher assign one event to each group. Ss copy the chart and each group works together to find the info to complete it. Ss make three more copies of the blank chart. Teacher makes new group of four, comprising members of each previous group. Ss share the info with one another and complete the charts for all events. T checks and collates all the info in a summary chart on the smart board with itools, showing all four events.
Exercise 2b- Ss read the text again and answer the question. Which of the events are the oldest in the world? Answer: The FA Cup and Wimbledon.
T tells ss that they are going to hear Emma, George, Lucy and Max talking about their favourite sports events. Ss read questions to find out what they will look for: What's their favorite event? Why do they watch it? Ss make a chart for 4 people. T- Play and pause the recording after each speaker to allow ss to write down their answers. Ss compare in pairs before teacher check with the class.
Ss make a list of important sports events in their country. Each student chooses one event and complete a chart about that event. Then they use their information charts to write a paragraph about their chosen event for homework.
