Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and scan reading practice using a text about different experiences of winners and losers in the context of Competition

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of adverbs, /really/very/too/quite in the context of experiencing a winning in a competition.

Procedure

Warm-Up (4 minutes) • Create interest in the context of the lesson

Show a short video from youtube on Mr. Bean winning a competition. Ask the Ss "what do you think?" & "What was it?" Elicit- raffle, lottery, COMPETITION DRILL! Competition-- show form on board GROUP the Ss. Have them discuss the questions on OHP. FB- "Can you guys share?" Q.2+3 PRETEACH VOCAB

Prediction (3-4 minutes) • To encourage Ss to predict/ think about the content of the text and give them a reason to read.

TASK- Fold paper. Look at the Title. "what's a winner/loser?" DRILL CCQ if needed. Read the subtitle. "Read that little bit/part" "What's do you think we are going to read about?" Share with Partner. "Look at the photos now" "what do you think"

Reading (10-15 minutes) • To check if Ss predictions were correct.

"Now let's find out" "Go ahead and have a read" Questions: Answer alone. Pair the students "Ask your partner the same questions to find out what happened to Jim/Sandra" -- Don't write this time. "Just Speak" FB- Ask Ss with Jim/Sandra to share about Sandra/Jim story. "What's the difference from Jim/ Sandra?"

Scan Reading (2-3 minutes) • To have Ss read for specific information.

Ss will scan and circle all the adjectives they can find. Next, have them match the opposites. FB- "what opposites did you find?"

Review of Adverbs- Really, Very, Too, Quite (10-15 minutes) • To provide review of adverbs and guide them to the discovery of structure.

HO-2 Part A. Have Ss match the correct sentence to the photo. FB- clarify, also remember that "too" has a negative meaning= more than you want Model part B on OHP Pair Up and Peer Check Complete Part C- if needed tell them what the verb 'be' is in past simple- was/were FB- did they get it right? have the share examples of what they found
