Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Introduce the concept from Monday nights lesson on places being close or far away. 1 min. Ask students to indicate examples of things which are near or far away. 2 mins I will use a few items and demonstrate the use of, 'this', 'that', 'these', and 'those' with objects from the students and in the classroom. 1 min.
A) Hand out exercise 1 and ask students to match the sentences 1-4 to the pictures A-D. Demo 1 min: Give students 2 mins to work out individually. Ask students to check answers with person next to them. 1 min. Elicit from class the correct answers. 2 min B) Ask the students to cover the sentences, work in pairs and say the sentences by only looking at the pictures. 2 min ICQ1. What are you going to match? ICQ2. Are you going to match pictures A-D with 1-4.
A) Ask students when we use this, that, these, those - students discover the rule. Indicate on WB the specific usage of the keywords. Indicate an object or thing that is close or far away using the 'this', 'that', 'these', and 'those' / WC - 2 mins B) Ask the students to take out objects from their bags and scatter them around the class (make sure some are singular, others are plural). Students get back to their seats and in pairs point out to their own objects saying This is my scarf / Those are my pens, etc. / PW - 4 mins C) Leave the objects around. In pairs, students ask and answer about the colour of the objects using this/that/these/those; e.g. What colour is that scarf? What colour are those bags? / GW - 4 mins CCQ1. Is this far away? (point to object) / Is this near? (point to object) CCQ2. Is it singular? / Is it plural?
Form groups of 3-5 students. Demo - 1 min. Give them handout for Ex 3a. Ask students to find the expressions which have the same meaning as the underlined phrases in the dialogues. / GW - 4 mins. Get feedback and check answers. / WC - 2 min.
Show a dictionary and ask what kind of dictionary they use in class? at home? Elicit Turkish-English (bilingual), English-English (monolingual), mobile phone, internet, CD-ROM. / WC - 2 mins. Ask students why they use a dictionary? Brainstorm and try to elicit vocal: mean / meaning, spell / spelling, check / find out / WC - 2 mins. Demo activity - 1 min. Hand out purposes for using a dictionary (1-5) and the dictionary entry for the word 'live'. Ask them to match 1-5 with A to E. / PW - 4 mins.
