Upper Secondary 4 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss learn new lexis related to the animal kingdom. As a lead-in, Ss talk about three animals found in their countries - its food habits, where it lives, etc. Ss share what they have discussed with the class. Ss are then shown pictures of different animals and are asked to talk about their habitat and food habits. Words like reptiles, mammals, arachnids are displayed on the IWB and Ss are asked to classify the animals. Next, Ss are given pictures of animals like the komodo dragon, platypus and boa constrictor, cards with names of animals and cards with description of animals. Ss work in groups and match the animals with the correct name and description. Meanings of new words mentioned in the description are discussed. This is followed by a reading activity. Thepicture of a bird is displayed on the boards and Ss are asked to predict the name of the bird, its habitat and eating habits. Ss are given a jumbled up text and are asked to reorder and read it. Ss are given a few tasks linked to the text. They are given HOs and are asked to find the word in the text with the help of the given clues. They are then asked to form 5 questions based on the text, exchange the questions with their partners, answer them and check the answers. Ss are shown pictures of extinct and endangered animals. Ss are asked to describe those animals and discuss why certain species are extinct or endangered. They also discuss how extinction of a certain species effects the environment. Ss are asked to make a poster on endangered animals. They are to work in groups and once they have completed the task, they are to give their views or opinions on posters made by other groups. Ss then engage in a listening activity. They are to listen to the recording and fill in information missing in a timetable. They check their answers and listen to another piece of recording and label places on a map. If time permits Ss are to talk about their favourite animal. Ss are to write a short autobiography of their favourite animal.

Main Aims

  • For Ss, to clarify and review lexis related to animals. For Ss, to practice reading for specific information and to draw inference.

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss, to practice and improve listening for specific information

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To activate Ss schemata

Ss discuss in pairs about three animals found in their country. They are instructed to talk about food habits, habitat etc. Ss share their answers with the class.

Controlled Speaking Practice (10-13 minutes) • For Ss to speak fluently using lexis related to animals

Task 1: Pictures of animals are displayed on the IWB. Ss work in pairs and discuss about the habitats of animals. They are to chose from the word prompts displayed on IWB. They answer the question: Which of these animals have you seen? When and where? Classify these animals: Mammals, reptiles, amphibians. Task 2: Ss work in groups. Each group is given pictures of animals, their names and description. They are to match all three. Ss then go around and check if other groups have go the same answer. WCFB is done.

Reading Task (25-30 minutes) • For Ss, to practice and improve reading for specific information and to draw inference from the text.

Pre-reading Task: A picture of a bird is displayed. SS are asked to guess its name. food habits and habitat. Reading Task: Task1:Ss are given the text and are asked to arrange it in order. Then they are asked to read and fill in gaps. Task 2: Ss are then instructed to read the clues given to them and find out the word from the text that matches the given clue. Task 3: Ss are instructed to make 5 questions based on the text. They then exchange the questions with their peers and answer the questions. The question and answers are returned and checked by Ss. The questions and answers are discussed during WCFB. Post reading task: Ss discuss animals that are extinct or endangered. (They are introduced to these words during the speaking activity) Ss are to asked to discuss ways to protect endangered species. They are then asked to make a poster of an endangered animal. Models of a few posters are displayed. Once the task is complete, Ss look at what other groups have done and give their opinions.

Listening Practice (15-17 minutes) • For Ss, to practice and improve listening for specific information.

Pre listening Task:Pictures of two different zoos are displayed. Ss compare the two and talk about their experiences. Ss answer the questions:Do you think it is a good idea to keep animals in zoos? Why / Why not? What can children and adults learn form zoos? Listening Task1: Ss are to listen to the recording and fill in the missing information in a time table. Ss are asked to read the time table before they listen to the recording. Ss then listen to the recording and complete their task. They check their answers with each other and then listen to the recording again. The answers are then displayed on the IWB. Listening Task 2: Ss answer a few questions based on a map of the zoo. Ss are instructed to listen to the recording and mark a few places on the map. PC and WCFB are done.

Freer Written Practice (25-28 minutes) • For Ss, to practice and improve writing an essay using lexis based on animals.

Ss are asked to talk about their favourite animal in pairs. Ss are then asked or to write an essay or a story on their favourite animal. Ss are encouraged to use lexis they have learnt in this lesson. (If there is not enough time, Ss complete their story at home).
