Subsidiary Aims

Procedure (38-50 minutes)
T will pass out three pictures and have the Ss have a discussion about the pictures. What is happening on these pictures? Who are they? Are they spending their time wisely? T will get FB from a few Ss from each group.
The Ss then will have to match the pictures, to the conversation on ex.1. That way they will have an overall idea as to what is happening in the text. Similarly, they will be exposed to some of the underlined sentences. The T will get the Ss to check their answers as a group. And then the T will get WC FB from a few students. The T should make sure to ask "Why" in order to see the reasoning behind the Ss, so that the T can make sure that they have understood the main idea of the text.
The T will go over the first two sentences of the text in an attempt to clear away ambiguities so that it won't prohibit the Ss from understanding the text. T goes over "We are making a good time. Yes, hopefully we will be there in time for dinner.". Then, the T will tell the Ss to focus on the underlined words in the text. The T will ask the Ss to replace the underlined phrases in exercise 1 with the time expressions below in exercise 2 in pairs. Afterwards Ss will check their answers as a group. And then, Ss will listen to the conversation from an audio file and check their answers. The T may have to play the audio file twice.
The T will use an OHP and project the target language (time expressions) on the board. And clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation for each expression. The T will have to focus mainly on these five words: making a good time, in time for, time to spare, running out of time and one at a time.
The T will tell the Ss that they are going to interview each other about how well they use their time and what kind of activities they use their time for? The Ss will practice in pairs T will get answers from one or two students.
The T will ask the Ss to work with a partner and ask the Ss to choose three of the expressions from exercise 2 and include them in a short conversation. The T will repair the Ss so that they can work with other students and use the expressions that they have learned.
