Description

In this lesson, the students learn about ordering food and drink in a cafe. The students will elicit from pictures the TL. Then they will listen to recordings of the the TL in use and answer questions on what they heard. After that there will be a controlled speaking activity where students will practice the TL followed by a freer role-play activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T gives ss a handout with questions like' where do you most like to eat and drink?','what do you usually order when you eat in a restaurant ?..'do you like fast food ?'..'How often do you eat fast food?'.. -Ask ss to work in pairs and discuss together .. then get the feedback ..and tell them about your preferences ..

short listening (6-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the main track and make it accessible..To further expose Ss to the context

-Focus ss on the meaning of food words in exercise'1' by using realia and pictures 'eliciting the meanings'.. -Get ss individually to tick any that are similar to their own language ..'what's it ? is it the same or different from your own language ?'.. -Ask ss to give you other examples of these words ' can you give me another food word like these words?' -T asks them to listen to "T6.5" record and drills any word that seem to be difficult ..

While-Listening #1.. listening for specific information (scanning) (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks..to listen for detailed information

-Focus ss on the three pictures and ask them to match the food and the restaurants.. 'which restaurant sells pizza ..hamburgers ..coffee and cake ? ..ask them to work in pairs and check together ..then get the feedback.. -Ask ss to guess the answers of the exercise 2 questions ..'which of the restaurants are they in ?..what do the people order? how much does it cost ?'..let them check together their expectations .. -then play the recordings .. (T6.6)

While-Listening #2..listening for functional language (9-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks..to practice requests

stage #1-Ask ss to read the conversations and predict which word goes in each gap .. -Let them work in pairs to check then play the recordings .. stage#2-Ask ss to read the transcript on page 168 and listen at the same time ..(T6.7) -Pause the recordings after each sentence and get ss to repeat .. -Paying attention to polite intonation .. -help with the pronunciation as needed ...

Post-Listening..freer speaking practice(Role-play) (4-8 minutes) • To practice ordering while eating out and to provide students with free practice of the target language ..also to provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned...

-Put Ss in pairs... Give role of Assistant\ waiter to one and Customer to another... Show menu Say "Customers, you choose something to eat or drink" Say "Assistant\waiter, you ask for the money from the customer" ICQ- "Customers, what do you have to do?" "Assistants what do you have to do?" Give menus to each student..ss continue with their own role plays swapping roles when they have finished the first conversation ..

if time (3-5 minutes) • To provide further speaking practice if there still is time

- Everyone will be in groups of 3. - One student will be chosen from each group. - The chosen member will be given an object to describe and a piece of paper on which it has words the describer can not use while describing the object they have. - The describers will sit apart from their friends. - Describers will be given one minute to think about how they will describe their object. - Each group will come together after the 1 min describers had, and in front of the class the 2 sts in the group will try to understand what the object is in 1 minute. - The winning group's members get 1 Australian coin each...
