Materials
Main Aims
-
To develop the students' vocabulary in relation to travelling to work from home over a long distance.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To develop the students' reading skills in the context of a short text on travel by scanning and skimming the text.
Procedure (36-45 minutes)
The students will be given the images of Buenos Aires, Paceville, Province of San Luis and London. The students will be asked to find a number of features in the images from a provided list. The students will be asked to work in pairs. The students will then listen to a recording in order to check their answers.
The students will be introduced to the idea of 'close to' far from' and 'away'. (e.g. Where is the nearest Metro station? Is it close to ITI or far from ITI? How far is it? and Where's the nearest mosque? Is it close to your home? How far is it?) A. Students are tasked with identifying how far the features identified in the images are to them. Students work in groups of 4 students. B. The students compare their groups ideas with the rest of the class.
The students will be introduced to the text by analysing the title of the text, specifically, '800 kilometres away'. Further than Ankara but not as far as Antalya. The whole class will read a text on travel between home and work. They will be be asked to answer the questions. Where do Jose Luis and Lawrence live and work.
The students will be asked to answer six questions on the text. They will do the exercise individually then in pairs compare answers, then the whole class will compare. Answers to be written on W/B.
Ask the students to ask each other: 'Do they know anyone like Jose Luis or Lawrence? Does anyone in your family work in a different place? What about friends, or famous people. On WB : Do you live near your place of work/study? Demonstrate with my journey from Findikzade to ITI. It takes 45mins -1hour. Ask students to do the same for their journey to ITI. Ask around the groups, what did students learn about each others journeys.
