Procedure (15-61 minutes)
Warmer/Lead-in To set lesson context and engage students Teacher asks students oral questions about festivals : Do you remember Spanish festival? What are their habits and traditions? . Do you know any festival in Egypt? Is there a special drink or food or clothes in it ? Did you go to a festival before ? When ? With who ? What did you do ? What did you like and dislike ?
Teacher shows a video for Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans from National Geographic. Ss practice listening for gist and specific information. Teacher pre_teaches some vocab by using power points and flash cards to elicit lexis from them. Parades => flash card Lent ==> image and definition Settlers => flash cards Rich food => flash card Fancy => flash card Beads => flash card Ash Wednesday => definition
Teacher holds pictures to elicit vocabulary from students : what can you see? Are these clothes personally or special ? Yes , special, they are custom for festival and these people are parades. Who are they ? Yes people come from another country to use the land we call them settlers What are these?
Ss listen and watch a video of Mardi Gras festival for 5 minutes. Ss read notes and an article about Mardi Gras festival.
Ss summary the video that they watched in notes then , they discuss it. Ss answer Exercise 1 by matching the answers from notes (1_6) They use questions in EX1 again to match and rearrange the article
Ss will think about a festival that they have been to. They are going to tell his / her partner about it. They are using questions in Ex1 to interview his /her partner and finally they write their answers in note form.
Ss write a paragraph describing his / her partner's festival.
