Description

This lesson intends to practise students' listening skills - both listening for gist and listening for details in the context of different Jobs. Students also learn new expressions related to jobs and their conditions.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about people in their different work places in the context of different jobs' conditions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of different jobs
  • To provide clarification and practice of expressions related to jobs and their conditions in the context of different jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T starts with telling Ss about his job. -Ask Ss "Do you have a job?', "What are your jobs?", and "What are the conditions of your jobs?".

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with the language used in the listening audio.

-Point out that the expressions in the box are a much shorter way of saying the underlined phrases and do the first one of the exercise as an example with the class. -Ask Ss to replace the remaining underlined expressions. -Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. -Monitor and provide help if needed. -Check the answers with the whole class. -Ask Ss some CCQs to check if they understand the meaning. -Drill the expressions chorally and individually.

Pre-Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Focus the student's attention on the photos in exercise 1. -Ask Ss to say what jobs they think the people do and what they think their working conditions are like.

While-Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Play the recording for Ss to check their answers. -Check the answers as a whole class.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-Ask students to read the sentences for each job in exercise 2 and mark which sentences are true and which sentences are false. -Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. -Play the recording again for Ss to check their answers. -Check the answers as a whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Do the first one in exercise 3 with the class as an example. -Ask Ss to replace the remaining highlighted expressions and point that the new sentences must have the same meaning as the original ones. -Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. -Check the answers as a whole class. -Ask students to discuss jobs' conditions mentioned in the recording, whether they like to do one of these jobs and their ideal work conditions in pairs and groups. -Monitor and provide help if needed. -Take note of any errors which may need particular attention later and also any examples of good language use which can be praised in the feedback session. -Give feedback.

If/ time activity (4-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with further production of the TL.

-Put Ss in pairs and tell them who will be student A and who will be student B and set a model for them so they can understand the activity. -Monitor and give help if needed. -Take note of any errors which may need particular attention later and also any examples of good language use which can be praised in the feedback session. -Give feedback.
