Description

In this lesson, students will practise the use of -ED and -ING adjectives. The procedure will be Test-Teach-Test. First, students will be tested with an exercise in which they will have to choose the correct adjective form. The second exercise will be in the form of a gap-fill. Finally, students will get freer speaking practice using -ED and -ING adjectives while working in pairs.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of -ED and -ING adjectives to describe feelings.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about feelings.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Can you describe Mr Bean's feeling? What about the women behind him? Show the video clip "Mr Bean – Rollercoster" (1:06). How does he feel? Bored. What about the women behind him? Scared / Excited / Amused Show a picture of people at a party. Which person is bored? Which person is boring? Which person is embarrassed? Which person is embarrassing?

Test #1 (5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Instructions for HO1 (chested): underline the correct adjective in these sentences. Work alone. Are you ticking the right answer? No. Are you working alone? Yes Give students HO1 (2 min). Check your answers with your partner. Write the answers on the whiteboard.

Teach (15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

1. SENTENCE PATTERNS Remind students of the two adjective patterns used in English sentences: Be + Adj The book is interesting. Adj + N This is an interesting book. Do you want to read this book? Yes. 2. -ING ADJECTIVES DESCRIBE HOW THINGS/PEOPLE ARE Be + Adj This movie is exciting. Do you want to watch this movie? Yes. Adj + N She is a boring teacher. Do you want to study with her? No. 3. -ED ADJECTIVES DESCRIBE HOW YOU FEEL I am bored. My friend is excited. 4. CAUSE AND EFFECT "-ING makes you feel -ED" An interesting book makes you feel interested in it. This is a boring movie. I am bored. Why am I bored? Because of the movie. Pronunciation: stress, intonation. Drill (class then students randomly).

Test #2 (10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Instructions for HO2 (chested): complete the adjectives with -ED or -ING. Work alone (5 min). Demo 1. Are you writing the adjectives? Yes. Are you working with your partner? No. Monitor. Check your answers with your partner. Provide HO2 – Answer key.

Free practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask and answer the questions of Exercise 2 in pair. Ask for more information. Demo with one student.

Flexi-stage (5 minutes) • To provide students with fluency speaking practice

Ask students to think about other -ED and -ING adjectives to express their feelings (e.g. relaxed/relaxing, disgusted/disgusting, etc). Try to find 3 sentences with your partner. Demo: My friend likes eating bugs. I think it's disgusting! Monitor. Praise the students.
