Description

The students will be practicing their reading skills (skimming & scanning). We will be also focusing on prepositions in geographical descriptions in a speaking context.

Main Aims

  • My main aim is reading. The students will be given a text to improve their reading skills.

Subsidiary Aims

  • My sub aim is prepositions in geographical descriptions in a speaking context.

Procedure

Warmer (2-5 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students

I will use the projector to show the list of reasons for travelling and ask Ss to discuss in groups. I will also ask them to what other reasons that they can think of to go travelling. I will also highlight the difference between "to go travelling & to travel" FB: WC

Pre-reading (2-5 minutes) • to elicit the vocabulary from Ss before reading

I will handout a worksheet (related to this section as well as the next two sections). I will ask them to work in pairs to do Q1 (matching the words with the definitions). FB: Answer key will be provided.

Skim Reading (2-5 minutes) • to engage them in the reading text, / to practice the sub skill

I will give ask them to do Q2 in the same worksheet in 2 minutes. FB: WC

Scan Reading (7-10 minutes) • to improve their reading skills.

Ss will be asked to do the last question (Q3; T/F Qs) in the same worksheet. They will check the answer with their partners. FB: Answer Key to be provided.

post reading (3-5 minutes) • to practise TL

I will also ask them to work in pairs and ask each other the question on WB (the projector to be used) Q: "Do you agree that travel can help you escape from your problems?" FB: I will ask couple of students about their partner's opinion.

prepositions in geographical descriptions (10-15 minutes) • to get SS to practice TL in a speaking context

I will handout a worksheet and ask them to do Q1 in pairs. (They will make a list of different places they've travelled). FB: I will ask a couple of students. Then, I will ask them to do Q2 (to choose 5 places from their lists and describe to each other where these places are by using the expressions in the box on the HO). After instruction, I will use the projector for a demo. FB: I will ask a couple of Ss about what they have learned from their partner. If time allows, I will ask them to extend their conversation and ask each other where when an why they travelled to these places.
