Description

In this lesson, students will discuss about why we listen to music and how music affects our emotions. They will listen to a song and will be asked to describe their current emotions. For the second task, they will hear a second track about a music psychologist explaining why we listen to music. The third listening will be about three important human emotions within the context of musical choices that we make while under the effect of certain emotions.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about three basic human emotions related to music.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversation in the context of human emotions related to music.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show a picture of a musician via OHP, and ask students to talk about their preferences of music genres in pair. Teacher will initiate the stage by asking them the following questions: `Do you like listening to music?` `What kinds of music do you like?`

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before playing the music, teacher will elicit an answer from students on how music can make them feel happy,sad, sleepy and angry. Then teacher will play a song and let students share their feelings while they are listening to the song. Teacher will set the stage by asking the following question : `How do you feel while you are listening to the song?` Instruction: I`ll play a song first and tell me how do you feel while you are listening to the song.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher will reflect the questions from the OHP. The activity will include statements that they are required to complete. Before the listening, they will be asked to write their own sentences. The statements are as the following : 1. to make us.... 2. to help us to... 3. to intensify... While students are listening, they will answer these questions above. Pair check first WCFB later. Instructions: Look at these questions and talk with your partner.

Pre-Listening (3-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will give students time to look at the incomplete notes and let them give the answers individually. Teacher will pre-teach the following vocabulary items before the task by miming and gesturing. `higher pitch`,`falling pitch`

While-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher will reflect the incomplete sentences from OHP. While they are listenning, teacher will give students time to complete their notes by pausing between each section. Teacher will play the audio twice. Teacher will get students to compare with a partner before the whole class feedback. Instructions: While you are listening, please complete the notes.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher will reflect the questions from OHP and ask students to answer the guestions individually. To make students talk to somebody in the class, teacher will divide students into two groups which are the same size. Then students form two concentic circles. When teacher play the music, the inner circle moves clockwise, the outer circle anti-clockwise. When the music stops, students start to talk each other. Instructions: Look at the questions first then stand up and make inner and outer circle. When the music starts, the inner cicle moves clockwise, the outer circle anti-clockwise. When the music stops, please share your anwsers with your partner.
