Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide practice of (this) and (that) in the context of my favourite
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of your favourite things
Procedure (32-44 minutes)
I will draw a chart on the board that explains the meaning of favorite. For example big heart picture and someone before it and something after it. I will do the same with many things.
I will draw a chart on the board containing my favorite things and likes and try to mime and use gestures to clarify my favorites and then Ss listen to a conversation to get them involved to the TL which is object pronouns
I will stand next to a student and say "this is (xx) or I can pick up my pen... and I point to the window from a distance and say" "that is the window". I repeat with other students and objects.
I introduce the questions (what's this?), (what's that?) and I make sure Ss understand that we use (this) to refer to people and things near to us and (that) to refer to people and things that are not near to us. Then I focus their attention on the conversation pictures and show how to use the correct form: this/that+is+noun and I drill the correct pronunciation chorally. Finally, I play the conversation recording for Ss.
I pre-teach (hate), (like) then I make sure that Ss understand what the answer (it) refers back to (ice-cream). I give the instructions to do the practice and complete the sentences with (it, you, them) and they do it individually, when they finish in 4 minutes, I ask them to check their answers in pairs and after that I play the recording so Ss can check their answers
I show Ss some vocab pictures and draw a smiling face on the board to introduce the thing they like and a frowing face to introduce the thing they hate or dislike. I drill the language chorally and individually. Then, I ask Ss to give 2 or 3 more examples in open pairs and then in closed pairs and I monitor and check for the correct use of object pronouns.
