Main Aims

  • To provide practice of past simple and past continuous in the context of art

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy by video listening and speaking exercises

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T elicits the context from previous lesson. Then, T asks Ss to work in pairs for about 2 minutes and discuss what they can remember about the TL. After that, T asks Ss what their partner can remember.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the TL through a listening activity.

T says Ss will listen to a song and complete the gaps, then gives HO1.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T writes on the board some of the lyrics of the song and elicits which tense they are. T gives hints with drawing time lines.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

T divides the class into 5 groups. Ss have 1 minute to put the verbs into the past simple on HO2 while T draws two columns headed "Regular" and "Irregular". Individuals go to the board one by one from each goup and match cutups with the correct columns. Then, T tells Ss they have 2 minutes to fill in the blanks with the missing words and gives HO3 for a quick Past Continuous revision. After that, a WCFB.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss have 5 minutes to do ex. 1, 2 and 3 on HO4 alone. Then peer check in 3 minutes and FB for 2 minutes.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

T hands HO5s and draws three columns headed "/t/", "/ıd/" and "/d/" on the board. Ss practice the pronunciation and match the words with columns. Then T drills the pronunciation and elicits the rule from Ss.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the TL

Same groups work together to create their own song and write the lyrics using the TL. Then, they read it to the class. WCFB at the end.
