Materials

Main Aims

  • To practice pronunciation of words using the 4 phonemes presented.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking in the context of illness and injury.

Procedure

Warmer (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To reintroduce certain lexical items T will ask Ss to have a short debate on the health industry trends and the current status of hospitals in Turkey. This should spark some personalized discussion on the topic by provoking them to list common problems that Ss encounter in their daily lives. T-S task feedback (elicit some vocabulary)

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for oral practice and recognition of selected symbols

T will use a Crossword Puzzle handout after delivering the meanings of the basic lexical units by eliciting the familiar ones and giving the rest in a context. In order to make sure they understand each unit, Ss will be asked CCQs under disguise after they're finished with the crossword puzzle.

Pronunciation (7-8 minutes) • To match the vocabulary with the four chosen phonemic symbols

Before beginning the task, T will talk about some bigger issues while dealing with pronunciation in general. This will set the tone for the core part of the lesson and support the main framework in terms of personalized motivation. After delivering the second handout, T will introduce the sounds that are associated wih the four specific symbols. Ss will fill the charts with the relevant words that fit under certain symbols.

Phonemic Bingo (12-15 minutes) • To strengthen the relation between words and the sound system of English (Gamification)

T will tell the Ss that they are about to hear some words from native speakers (outsourced to an online dictionary, namely Merriam-Webster). They will get cards that have 12 phonemic symbols (some symbols to re-occur for a number of times) and whenever they hear a word that carry the said symbol, they are to circle it and write the word under the same symbol. However, there's a catch: when the winner is announced, if there's also a simultaneous winner, each of them will compete in a pronunciation mini-race. If there's a single winner, (s)he is expected to read the words aloud to a minimum error range. If the task is completed too early, cards might be shuffled into a new deck by flipping the other side for a second round. T will give detailed modelling throughout the stage and throw some previously learnt vocabulary into the mix while playing the pronunciation tracks from the software for variation.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to use acquired vocabulary items in a natural conversation

In pairs, Ss will ask each other questions taken from ex. f. What injuries or illnesses they might get when they are cooking/doing sport/etc.
