Main Aims

To provide ss clarification and controlled and semi-controlled practice of will, going to and present continuous for future arrangements (future forms) in the context of family.

To provide ss accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of family and friends.

To provide ss gist listening practice using a text about daily dialogues between family members in the context of family.
Procedure (39-49 minutes)
Tell ss a personal anecdote. In my family, I spend the most time with my mum. We always have breakfast together. At the weekends we go for a walk with our dog and have a cup of coffee in our favourite cafe in the neighbourhood. Ask sts to talk in pairs and tell each other who they spend the most time with in their family and what they like doing together in 1-2 minutes. Elicit answers from a few ss and ask them to tell everyone about who their friends spend time with in 1-2 sentences.
Tell ss that they will now listen to three daily conversations between family members. Tell them to write down who the family members are and what they are talking about. Play recording (Track 1.16) once. Ask ss to check their answers in pairs before open class feedback. Elicit answers from ss and get the confirmation of the rest.
Tell ss that they will listen to the dialogues again but this time they should pay attention to the sentences in the listening text. Tell ss that now they will decide which dialogue each sentence comes from and write numbers next to them. Give ss Handout 1. Show them the exercise a. Do a demo together. Play recording (Track 1.16) again. Show ss answer key on the board.
Ask ss What do we use these sentences for? What do they mean? Elicit a few ideas. Tells ss to complete the guided discovery handout about the future forms (will, going to, present continuous for future arrangements) used in the dialogues. Monitor and help as necessary. Conduct open class fb, eliciting the answers onto the board. Ask CCQs to check understanding of meaning. Elicit the form of the different structures onto the board. Tell ss that now they will work on the pronunciation of future forms. Wipe the board. Use the recording (1.21) to model and drill example sentences of the verb forms chorally and individually. Correct when necessary.
Tells ss that they are going to choose the correct verb form to complete some sentences used between friends and family. Tell ss to do the exercise in pairs. Monitor and help as necessary. Elicit the answers onto the board.
Tells ss that they are going to talk in pairs about their family and friends. Show ss the question prompts on the board and tell them to ask and answer questions in pairs. Help students as necessary and note down some of the things students are saying.
Ask ss to share one or two of answers. Write 4-5 examples of good language and language which needs correction on the board. Tell ss to discuss the language in pairs, deciding which ones are correct and which ones need correction. Praise ss for the good language and elicit corrections for the rest.
