Description

In this lesson. Ss review degrees of comparison (adverbs and adjectives) and do reading and speaking activities related to Transport. As a lead-in, a quiz is conducted based on the vocabulary and grammar clarification done in the previous class. Ss then do a task race on degrees of comparison in groups. This is followed by a wall walk, where in Ss are to match words with meanings. Next, a reading activity based the topic of Transport is done. Ss are asked to design a vehicle of their own in groups. Ss then engage in a speaking activity. They are encouraged to use new phrases to introduce and finish their speech. This is followed by another reading activity where in Ss match the headings to the text. The lesson ends with a speaking task, where in Ss discuss different aspects related to the topic: Transport.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead in (5-6 minutes) • To activate students' schemata

A quiz is conducted based on what was done in the previous class (degrees of comparison and travel).

Controlled written practice (18-20 minutes) • To check and review Ss previous knowledge on degrees of comparison.

A task race is conducted. Ss are put in groups of three/ four. Each groups gets a task at a time. Once the task is completed and checked, they move on to the next task. WCFB and error correction are done

Controlled reading practice (18-20 minutes) • For Ss to improve and develop skills in reading for specific information, scanning and to draw inference.

Task 1: SS work in pairs. They are given the passage/text in three bits. They are asked to order the text. PC and WCFB is done. Ss are asked to scan the text and discuss the central or main idea of the text. Task 2: Ss are asked to open their text books to page 29. They are instructed to do Ex 3. They are asked to label the diagram and fill in the gaps based on the text. In this task, Ss are to read to find specific information.They work alone and later discuss their answers with their peers and feedback is given. on the same. Task 3: Ss are instructed to do Ex.5 from the text in pairs. For this task Ss are to draw inference from the text and give their own opinions. Ss are required to discuss the questions orally.

Warmer: Ss are asked to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of cars. They are also asked to compare cars with public transport. Task 1: Wall walk (unblock vocab): Ss are to match the words with their meanings. Ss work in pairs. The words are displayed around the class and Ss are instructed to match the meaning given to them with the words. Task 2: SS work in pairs. They are given the passage/text in three bits. They are asked to order the text. PC and WCFB is done. Ss are asked to scan the text and discuss the central or main idea of the text. Task 3: Ss are asked to open their text books to page 29. Ss design their own future vehicle in groups. They are given a few clues on what they need to keep in mind while designing their future vehicle. They are asked to present their design to the class.

Listening Practice (18-20 minutes) • For Ss to practice listening for specific information

Warmer: Ss are asked to discuss in pairs about a travel experience. They are given certain clues: Tansport, travelled with, Good/bad and remember the trip because. They are encouraged to write notes. Task1: Ss are asked to read the text on page 31. Ss are asked to guess where Kyung-Soon travelled. They are asked to fill in the gaps with the words given in the box. Ss then listen to the text and check their answers. Task 2: Ss discuss the central idea of the text and complete Ex 3 on the same page. They are to orally discuss the phrases Kyung Soon used to describe her journey. Ss then give their own examples of sentence openers. Task 3: Pronunciation: Ss engage in Ex2 on page 32. They are asked to mark the main stress in the words. Ss then listen to the words and check where exactly the main stress is. The words are drilled. Ss work in pairs.

Controlled reading practice (20-22 minutes) • For Ss to practice and improve reading for gist.

Warmer/ Lead-in: Ss are shown pictures of traffic jams in Dubai. They are to discuss :Why there are taffice jams? What problems do they cause? Discuss solutions for this problem. Task1:(Unblock vocabulary) A few words are displayed on the IWB. Ss are asked to discuss the meanings of these words. Task2: Ss work in pairs. Ss are shown the main and sub heading of the text and are asked to predict what the text is about. Then each pair is given 5 different texts and headings. They are to read the text and match the headings to the text. They check their answers with their peers. WCFB is done.

Controlled written practice - Vocabulary (10-13 minutes) • For Ss to use verbs cause and make accurately in sentences.

Task1: Ss are given a text and are asked to fiil in the gaps with verbs cause or make. PC and WCFB is done. Tr. questions Ss: What is the difference between cause and make? When would you cause or make? Task 2: A few sentences are displayed on the board and Ss discuss the meaning and use of cause and make. Task 3: Ss are given HOs and are asked to correct the sentences and fill in the gaps based on the use of verbs cause or make.

Freer Speaking Practice (15-17 minutes) • For Ss to develop and improve their speaking skills using new lexis based on the topic:Transport

Task 1: Ss work in pairs. They are given a HO with questions based on transport and traffic jam. They question each other on the same. They share their answers with the class. WCFB and error correction is done. if time permits, Taboo is played based on the new words learnt in class.
