Description

Students will learn how to use ''there is/are'' in all its forms. This is the TL. The context is describing the contents and rooms of a house, both a specific one, The White House, and houses in general. They will speak about their own homes to practise the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of ''There is/are'' in the context of describing the contents of a home or other house.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of houses and their contents

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw house plan on board. Ask students, ''what do I have in my house?'' Invite answers from volunteers or nominate.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give Handout Students write answers. Feedback as group. Nominate.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Show board plan. Explain. Drill pronunciation.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Pairs. Students talk about possible answers. Monitor. Share with group. Students write up suggestions. Praise and reformulate.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Pairs. Speaking Exercise 1. Students draw a plan of their home but don't show it. Then they tell each other about their home and the other S has to draw it. Feedback by showing each other their plans.
