Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of affirmative and negative forms of the present simple of be.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice to answer the exercises.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus the students' attention on the the pen that I hold in my hand. Ask the students," What is this?" Ask the students, "Is this a pen?", and "Is this a pencil?"

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Focus the students' attention on the first example of exercise. Read it loud to the class, emphasizing the affirmative and negative forms is and isn't. Ask the students to work in pairs and complete the rest of the exercise. Monitor the students and give help when needed. Play the recording for them to check their answers. Play the recording again if it's needed. Ask the pairs to compare their answers with others. Check answers with the whole class.

Teach (5-8 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Write three examples on the whiteboard. Explain the contracted and full forms of affirmative and negative forms of be in the present simple. Focus the students' attention on the first table in the margin, which shows the affirmative and negative forms of the present simple of be.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Focus the students' attention on the second exercise which shows the question form, and affirmative and negative short answers. Ask the students to complete the exercise. Play the recording for the students to check their answers. Play the recording again if it's needed. Divide the Ss into pairs to check their answers together. Check answers with the whole class.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the students into pairs, and ask them to take turns asking and answering the questions and to give true information in their answers. Monitor the Ss and give help when needed. Discuss their answers with the whole class.
