Main Aims

  • To introduce/review and give Ss practice in Present Simple – wh- questions & short answers in the context of who we live with

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide additional opportunity for practising speaking using wh-questions.

Procedure

GTKY (1-2 minutes) • To introduce myself to any new students. To learn any new names.

Check attendance. If new students arrive during another activity, introduce self and learn names at a suitable gap.

Activity 1 (1-3 minutes) • For Ss to have a clear context for TL. Link to previous session.

Remind students they have seen wh- questions in the reading about Andy Castle, a man living at home with his parents. Ss to underline the wh- questions on handout 1.

Feedback 1 (5-8 minutes) • Clarify form of wh-questions.

Elicit responses from activity 1. T writes examples on board. Drill 4 sentences. See separate board plan.

Activity 2 (3-5 minutes) • Controlled practice of TL

Pairs. Ss to complete sentences in exercise 1. Ss to write answers on handout.

Feedback 2 • Elicit responses. Clarify where needed.

Nominate Ss to answer.

Activity 3 (2-5 minutes) • More controlled practice of TL

Ss to complete exercise 2 on handout. Pairs. Write answers.

Feedback 3 (1-3 minutes) • Check student responses

Nominate Ss to answer

Freer practice (10-12 minutes) • To enable Ss to widen their experience of using wh- questions.

Ss to work in two teams. They come up with as many correct sentences as possible in ten minutes.

Feedback 4 (3-5 minutes) • To enable Ss to hear good TL and language that needs reformulating.

Ss in teams to nominate spokesperson. Spokesperson reads out sentences group has made. Reformulate as required.

Optional activity (5-10 minutes) • To give more free practice to Ss in using TL

Ss to write a profile of themselves by asking and answering 5 questions. Individual.
