Description

In this lesson, students learn new vocabularies through guided discovery based on a listening audio about Brad Pitt's favourite things.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of words related to favourite things in the context of Brad Pitt's favourite things.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Brad Pitt's favourite things in the context of favourite things.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus the students' attention on the photo of Brad Pitt. Ask the students if they know who he is(a famous Hollywood actor). Find out if they've seen any films that he has been in.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask the students about the meaning of favourite things. Give some examples of my own: my favourite actor, my favourite film,etc.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Focus the students' attention on the list of Brad Pitt's favourite things, and the categories in the box. Explain that they have to complete the table with the headings from the box.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Go through the headings and make sure that the students understand and pronounce them correctly. Point out that the first one has been done for them as an example: Dianne Wiest is Brad Pitt's favourite actor.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask the students to complete the table Then play the recording for them to listen and check their answers. Play the recording again if it's needed. Divide the Ss into pairs to check their answers together. Check their answers and give them a feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask the students to use the headings in Exercise 1 and make lists with the things in the box. Divide Ss into pairs to check their answers together. Check their answers and give them a feedback.

Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask the students to decide what their own favourite things are. Divide Ss into pairs to run a conversation about their own favourite things. Give them the feed back
