Teaching Practice 4
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson Ss review/learn some verbs related to money and spending in general. A thematic song is used to introduce the topic at the beginning of the lesson. The song is also used to introduce some thematic vocabulary items and phrases. Later, the Ss are asked to work on a handout in which target vocabulary items are reviewed. Throughout the lesson different interaction patterns and FB techniques are used. Lastly, the Ss are asked to engage in a communicative speaking activity where they interview each other about the topic.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in using money related verbs through the use of listening (a thematic song), handouts and a communicative speaking activity.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for gist and specific information. To give them practice in guessing the meaning of thematic verbs using the context. To give them practice in speaking about a certain theme (money and spending) using the target language they learned.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T asks: "What do you do in the morning to wake up?" and elicits answers. (The aim is to narrow down the topic to "singing and songs".) -T asks: "Any favorite songs?/"What are their themes?" (The aim is to narrow down the theme to "money/spendingé etc.) -In pairs they brainstorm some songs related to money. Elicitation, short discussion.

Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide a model of TL use in coming tasks through listening. To introduce thematic vocabulary.

-They listen to a song (track 1.34) and do the fill in the blanks task in Handout 1. Peer check w/c FB - They listen again and do the second vocabulary task in Handout 1. Peer check w/c FB (answers will be checked on the board- Ss will be asked to stand up and come to the board to put the meanings on slips of paper near the correct vocabulary item.) Further clarification if necessary - Short discussion about the meaning of the song and asking if they liked it or not. w/c elicitation

Useful Language- Exposure 2 (13-15 minutes) • To highlight/introduce and clarify useful vocabulary (verbs about money).

-T pairs the Ss up again (so that they have new partners) and asks them to do the task on Handout 2. (MFP is not dealt with at this stage since they are expected to work the meaning out themselves using the contextual clues.) FB using the track (1.35) MFP -T focusses on the difference between "lend" and "borrow" by giving examples. (Can I borrow your book?/Can you lend me your book?)

Productive Task (communicative task) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice TL by speaking about the general topic (money)

-T distributes different interview questions to the Ss. (A and B) They walk around and find someone with different questions and interview that person. They take down notes as they speak to each other and later report 1 thing they think is interesting about the person they interviewed. w/c FB T monitors during the activity.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

-T writes down a few sentences with errors they produce during the interview on the board and corrects them.
