Description

In this lesson, students will practice the use of adverbs of frequency in sentences. The class starts with a test, wherein Ss are to unscramble sentences and then add an adverb. This is followed by a task race. The Ss are put in groups of three for this activity and different tasks based on the use of adverbs of frequency is given to them. Next Ss are to make sentences on their own with a few adverbs. This is followed by a game where in Ss orally practice to use adverbs of frequency in pairs. After the game,Ss are given a hand out with a few phrases. Ss are to make interrogative sentences and use the sentences to question their partners.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice while asking and answering questions using adverbs of frequency.

Procedure

Lead in (8-10 minutes) • To activate students' schemata

Ss are given a HO, based on what they have learnt in the previous class.. They are to unscramble sentences and add adverbs of frequency. They work individually. The Hos are collected and then the answers are discussed.

Controlled written practice (Task race) (20-22 minutes) • For Ss to practice and improve the use of adverbs of frequency

Ss are divided in groups of three. They are given one task at a time. Once they complete the task successfully, they are given another task. Ss are to complete five tasks. Once the race ends, whole class feedback and error correction is done.

Lesser Controlled Written Practice (9-10 minutes) • To practice the use of adverbs of frequency in making sentences independently.

Ss are given HO with adverbs of frequency. They are to construct meaningful sentences using the adverbs. Peer correction and whole class feed back is done.

Controlled speaking practice (15-17 minutes) • To practice the use of adverbs of frequency in sentences fluently and accurately.

Students play a game in groups of three. They are to asks questions to each other using adverbs of frequency. Once they complete the game, WCFB is done.

Less controlled speaking practice (8-10 minutes) • To orally practice the use of adverbs of frequency in sentences fluently and accurately.

Ss are given a HO with phrases. They are to form question and answers using the phrases and adverbs of frequency. They are to work in groups of 3. They are encouraged to make a note of the question and answers. They are also encouraged to form sentences in the negative form. The questions and answers are then discussed in class.

Lesser Controlled Speaking Practice (15-17 minutes) • For Ss to orally practice adverbs of frequency fluently and accurately.

Ss form a circle. Ss are given a ball. The first person to start the game will ask a question. For example, How often do you go to the gym? Once the S asks the question, he/she passes the ball to the person they have directed the question to. The next S answers the question and asks another question and throws the ball to the S the question is directed to. Ss can also ask another S to answer in the negative form. The game is played till all Ss have got a chance to give an answer and ask a question. This activity is used to review/recap adverbs of frequency.
