Description

In this lesson, students will be able to improve their reading skills on the text. They will be able to improve their abilities on -Reading for gist -Reading for specific information -Reading for detail They will be able to personalise the topic on the post-reading stage.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed and inference reading practice using a text about alternative therapies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of therapies related vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets the students. Teacher asks students some questions about having stress in the work place. Teachers asks students the solutions about these problems.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher shows Ss therapy related pictures and asks Ss if they know any of these treatments and if they know anyone who has tried an alternative therapy. T introduces the treatments with the pictures. T shows a paper with ten vocabularies and ten descripcions. T tells studends to match the vocabs with their meanings. T hands out the paper. After matching the vocabs individually, T asks Ss to talk to their partner. After peer-working, T chekcks the answers.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to scan the text in two minutes to find out some specific questions. (without worrying about the gaps in the text) T: time's up! - which therapies are mentioned in the text? - what conditions are they treating?

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T tells Ss to read the passage this time carefully and fill the gaps. T observes Ss if their done and after PW, checks the anwers and talk about them.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T divides Ss into groups. T asks their goup name and writes on the board. T shows Ss some words like colour, aromas, furniture, artwork, plants and music. T asks Ss what changes they would make to their school to make it a healthier place to study in. T gives some time to Ss to talk about the topic. After dissgussing about some ideas, T asks Ss each group which idea was the most imaginative and which one was the most realistic one and gives points to the groups.
